More than 15 years after introducing the Chromebook, Google is rethinking the future of laptops with a new concept designed around AI-powered experiences.
Google recently previewed “Googlebook,” a new category of laptops that combines elements of Android and ChromeOS with built-in Gemini AI functionality. The goal is to create devices that are more intelligent, proactive, and personalized for modern users. While additional details and device availability are expected later this year, the announcement offers an early look at how AI-driven computing may shape the future of education technology.
For K-12 schools and higher education institutions already leveraging Chromebooks and Google Workspace, this evolution could introduce new opportunities for productivity, collaboration, and personalized learning.
What is Googlebook?
Googlebook is designed to merge the strengths of Android and ChromeOS into a unified laptop experience centered around Gemini AI. According to Google, these devices are being built “for a world moving from an operating system to an intelligence system.”
The platform combines:
- ChromeOS and the Chrome browser
- Android app support through Google Play
- Gemini AI-powered productivity tools
- Cross-device connectivity with phones and tablets
- Premium hardware from major manufacturers
Google is partnering with companies including Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo to develop the first generation of Googlebook devices.
Designed Around Gemini
One of the most notable aspects of Googlebook is its focus on embedded AI experiences powered by Gemini. Rather than functioning as a standalone chatbot, Gemini is intended to become a seamless part of everyday laptop use.
Magic Pointer
Google previewed a feature called “Magic Pointer”, which integrates Gemini directly into the cursor experience. By interacting with on-screen content, users can receive AI assistance in real time.
Examples include:
- Highlighting a date in an email to automatically create a meeting
- Comparing images side-by-side for visualization assistance
- Receiving suggestions based on what is displayed on screen
For educators and students, this type of workflow automation could help simplify common daily tasks and reduce issues when trying to multitask.
Create Your Widget
Another feature Google highlighted is “Create Your Widget”, which allows users to generate custom widgets using prompts. Gemini can pull information from integrated apps like Gmail and Google Calendar to create personalized dashboards that organize schedules, reminders, travel details, and other information in one place.
This is just the first of glimpse into the new Googlebook. More information is expected in the coming months as devices are scheduled for release this fall.
