Google Extends AUE Date for Chromebooks

Google Extends AUE Date for Chromebooks
Google announced Chromebooks that were released from 2021 onwards will automatically get 10 years of updates.

Chromebooks Built to Last

When Chromebooks debuted in 2012, their affordable price tags helped make technology more accessible in the classroom; helping provide schools with secure, simple and manageable devices while helping them save on their budgets. In fact, Chromebooks are the number one device used in K-12 education across the globe.

Google has continued to look for ways to keep your Chromebooks up and running even longer. All Chromebook platforms will now get regular automatic updates for 10 years — more than any other operating system commits to today.

Starting in 2024, if you have Chromebooks that were released from 2021 onwards, you’ll automatically get 10 years of updates. For Chromebooks released before 2021 and already in use, users and IT admins will have the option to extend automatic updates to 10 years from the platform’s release (after they receive their last automatic update).

Even if a Chromebook no longer receives automatic updates, it still comes with strong, built-in security features. With Verified Boot, for example, your Chromebook does a self-check every time it starts up. If it detects that the system has been tampered with or corrupted in any way, it will typically repair itself, reverting back to its original state.

What Are Automatic Updates?

Google provides regular automatic updates to Chrome devices to guarantee their security and reliability. They include updates to the device itself, Chrome OS, Chrome Browser and firmware, and are applied seamlessly in the background, causing no interruptions to user productivity. Once applied, a simple reboot of the Chromebook (<10 seconds) is all it takes for the updates to take effect.

With Chrome OS, you don’t even notice your system updating with the latest and greatest features.

Keep Devices Secure & Updated

Google works closely with hardware and software partners to provide fixes that allow Chrome to continue providing OS improvements. Agreements with all of the component vendors allow them provide seamless security patches and stability improvements along the way. However, the technology these agreements are based on will eventually become obsolete and so the AUE cannot be managed for an indefinite amount of time.

AUE ChromeThat’s why Google has the Automatic Update Expiration, a shelf life that ensures the latest software is always operating on the most suitable hardware. All devices have a date when automatic software updates expire, which is determined by when the hardware platform was first introduced to the market, rather than the purchase date of the device.

Remember: AUE dates keep devices safe – once passed, they may be fine to use, but they’re no longer the secure devices they were designed to be and may not meet regulatory requirements for your school or district.
